Is Organic Gardening Always Safe
It seems like that everywhere you turn nowadays,
people are discussing organic gardening and how good it is for you to
eat organically grown fruits and vegetables. Nevertheless, are organic
grown fruits and vegetables as good for you and safe as people claim?
Keep on reading as this article will provide you with food for thought.
A scientist from the United Kingdom undertook a recent study. The
study exposed that nearly 33% of the food being sold in the UK had
measurable levels of pesticide and chemicals. These levels are
used in crop enhancement and are unsafe to the human body. Furthermore,
the same study showed that throughout the world, nearly all developed
countries, had around the same levels of contamination. Unfortunately,
organically grown food was included also.
It was due to the ground water that the plants consumed was the primary
reason for this contamination. This is from years and years of chemical
fertilizer and pesticides being dumped on the ground. This was to
enhance the yield and accelerate the growth of the produce, then
leeching into the ground water table. It is better to use filtered
water or distilled water so your organic gardening can avoid this
water. Nevertheless using distilled water means your produce will be
short on certain nutrients vital to the wellness of your body. The
contamination is also caused by the wind currents, in addition to the
ground water.
A great deal of the fertilizers and pesticides
applied to the crops are sprayed on. Therefore, the mist of chemicals
is picked up by the wind and may be carried a good distance before
falling to the earth. Your plants will become covered with the
synthetic pesticides and fertilizer if your organic garden happens to
be in the path of the wind.
Other studies have shown, over a period of years or even months, these
same pesticides and other chemicals may cause health problems in the
human body. Furthermore, and a little more distressing, is it's now
believed that these chemicals can affect the brain development of
unborn babies in the mother’s womb. These chemicals have also
been associated to the breakdown of the nervous system, certain forms
of cancer, weakening of the immune system and other diseases which can
ruin the vital organs of the human body.
You may believe that you will be protected if you wash your veggies,
but this is not necessarily the case. These same studies have also
suggested that certain fruits and vegetables are susceptible to these
same chemicals leeching into the meat of these veggies and fruits
through the skin. Lemons or grapefruit are a good example of this kind
of fruit. For this reason, organic produce would actually be a
great deal safer than the regular grown fruit.
As you will be able to tell from reading the above information, organic
gardening may not be quite as safe as you believed it was. Even so,
with the right safeguards, such as always washing the veggies and
fruits before preparing or eating, will cut down the chance of
ingesting dangerous chemicals.
